Our History
One of the Largest Tropical & Foliage Growers in the MidwestOur company was started by James Masson in 1919 in Kansas City, Kansas. His son Alex R. Masson later joined him to help grow one of the first wholesale plant producing greenhouses west of the Mississippi River and east of the Rockies.
In 1972, the headquarters moved to Linwood, Kansas with another three-acre greenhouse. His sons, R. Alexander Masson and brother James Masson joined their father and continued to expand the company.
Throughout the 1980’s & 1990’s Alex R. Masson, Inc. grew to ship to fifteen states. By the mid 2000’s they were at 9 acres of greenhouse.
Mark and Andrea Illausky came on board in 2008 and purchased the company in 2012. They continued to pursue the goals from the past yet revolutionize the systems and operations of the business under the name Free State Growers.
After the tragic loss of Andrea in 2013, the company continued to evolve through changes in operations. Then in 2019, the entire greenhouse was leveled by a F4 tornado that tore through the countryside. Free State Growers started rebuilding a new facility immediately and added many automation updates as well as a more efficient heating and cooling system and better use of the overall space.
With a brand-new facility and a new outlook, Free State Growers has narrowed focus by growing specific crops for our customer base and working on keeping quality in the forefront of everything we do.
We take great pride in producing high quality and great performing plants for our customers. Our shipping territory has expanded to Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Iowa, and Illinois and the company is positioned for continued growth.
With roots that go back to 1919, our company has been established in the horticultural industry over 100 years.
